Carrara Marble Tiles
Here you will find all you need to know about Carrara marble tiles.
We are going to address the following subjects concerning the Carrara Marble Tiles:
Why are they so requested?
No doubt that Carrara marble tiles are synonym of elegance and good taste. Basically, they can be used for all types of indoor and outdoor applications. Carrara quarries produce a lot of different varieties of marble, allowing it to be one of the most traded marbles in the world.
If you are looking for a material to increase the value of your project, you could not make a better choice. Carrara marble tiles are still used today for coverings in offices, shopping centers, apartments, studios, museums, hotels and much more.
Why should you choose them?
There are so many reasons to choose them, let us point out those that are more interesting to you.
First: The look
Carrara marble never goes out of fashion. It has been used for thousands of years and it is still innovative and modern. Architects always diversify its uses creating real masterpieces in interior and exterior designs. This is why Carrara marble currently acquires even more importance when it comes to offering a valuable solution to the customer.
You may have noticed that Carrara marble tiles are used in several locations. Based on their quality and type, they are suitable for both indoor and outdoor applications, either as claddings or floorings.
Thanks to their easy workmanship, the assortment is quite wide. It is possible to choose among numerous finishings, ultimately giving you the desired effect. We have extensively addressed the different types of marble finishings in this article, which we recommend you to read.
Third: Durability over time
Differently from many other materials used for floors and claddings, Carrara marble lasts over time. The composition of its material assures to the customer a peace of mind during the purchasing process.
What would happen if you invested your money in a cladding that should be completely replaced after a few years?
With Carrara marble, this will not happen. Indeed, after a few years you might decide to renew the existing tiles just by asking a specialized company to carry out a simple treatment process. This way, your marble will always look brand new, as if it were just installed.
Moreover, there is an additional benefit: a property with indoors marble cladding will maintain a high value over time, turning the costs incurred into an investment for the future.
Fourth: Thermal insulation
A Carrara marble cladding allows your house to maintain a stable temperature across the year, according to the climate. Marble has good thermal insulation capabilities, keeping your house fresh during the summer and warm during the winter. Therefore, you will not need an excessive use of air conditioners or radiators to achieve a comfortable temperature, considerably saving your running costs.
What if we told you that, thanks to its composition, Carrara marble will be a great ally in energy saving?
That’s it. Mainly for the light-color varieties, there is an important content of calcium carbonate, which boosts the illumination in the room by reflecting the light. Therefore, a strong level of lighting is not required.
So, should you decide to create, for example, a bright room, a Carrara marble floor or cladding would be the best choice.
Sixth: Weight resistance
Have you noticed that many floors crack or break due to the furniture’s excessive weight or when a blunt object falls?
The reason is their low resistance to bumps or weight.
Carrara marble tiles, on the other hand, have a composition that can withstand heavy loads and stresses. The Carrara marble formation comes from tens of millions of years of metamorphism and development, which is why it is one of the most used materials ever.
In the Materials section of our website, you will find the features related to each type. Those might be technical terms, but they will give you a better idea of Carrara marble’s extraordinary quality.
Seventh: Unique pattern
How would you appreciate to have a single and unrepeatable design?
With Carrara marble you will achieve this result.
It is virtually impossible for your marble tiles to be exactly replicated elsewhere.
When the material is extracted from the mountain it is already art and, after cutting, the pattern becomes one of a kind.
There are several floors using Carrara marble coming from different extraction zones. Each one of them presents its own line and characteristics.
That is why adopting Carrara marble would transform your projects into something truly unique.
Eighth: Easy to clean
But… Doesn’t Carrara marble easily stain?
Actually, this statement is not true, because – as we explained in a recent article – it depends on the finishing it underwent.
It is obvious that, by “easy to clean”, we mean the ordinary cleaning, not the extraordinary one, where oils or waxes are used.
Should we use our tiles for a floor, a resin finishing would not be necessary, as they would be subject to walking wear and common dirt.
On the contrary, for a kitchen countertop, a resin finishing would be recommended or even essential.
As we were saying, marble responds very well to ordinary cleaning, thanks to its smooth surface and the capability to quickly dry. It is clear that a glossy surface has lower absorption compared to a satin or a rough one. In fact, for this reason, the latter is preferred for exteriors.
Ninth: It is odorless
Compared to numerous materials, the marble has this capability of not retaining odors. Indeed, Carrara marble is frequently used in kitchen backsplashes and countertops.
The kitchen, in particular, is one of the places where smells most tend to stick, often creating an inconvenience. Carrara marble tiles allow you to always have a neutral and clean environment.
Tenth: It is hypoallergenic
Is it true that Carrara marble, due to its porosity, is a nest to bacteria?
Many people use to think that Carrara marble behaves like a truly sponge to bacteria due to its porosity. It is not true.
In contrast, thanks to its composition, the marble is hypoallergenic. It is suitable for allergic people, ideal for families with small children, which are often touching the floor.
Its wide application, particularly in places of great turnout, such as shopping centers, stations, hotels and airports, proves what we have just said.
Carrara Marble Tiles
Scope of application
The scope of use of Carrara marble tiles is truly extensive.
Their utilization dates back to Roman times when, for obvious reasons, they were not as thin as they are today. These tiles were manually cut using rudimentary tools; reducing the thickness would have broken the tiles.
Many of the most famous monuments still existing today were made of marble, and this speaks volumes about the resistance of this material.
Nowadays, we can find Carrara marble tiles applied everywhere.
Thanks to the above-mentioned features, they are widely employed in claddings and floorings of:
- Museums and rooms
- Stations and airports
- Nautical furnishings
- Houses, villas and apartments
- Shops and restaurants

Dimensions of standard and customized tiles
The sizes of marble tiles often vary according to the reference market.
Generally, they can be found in thicknesses ranging from 1 to 2 cm.
Naturally, many customers ask us for a thinner tile – 1 cm instead of 2 – to save on material costs and, therefore, be able to cover a greater surface. That mainly depends on their own needs and the scope of application of the tiles.
You can find below a list of the best selling sizes in our company.
Let’s define these sizes as standard:
- 15,25 x 30,5 x 1 cm – 6” x 12” x 3/4”
- 30.5 x 30.5 x 1 cm – 12” x 12” x 3/4”
- 30.5 x 61 x 1 cm – 12” x 24” x 3/4”
- 61 x 61 x 1 cm – 24” x 24” x 3/4”
- 30.5 x 91.4 x 1 cm – 12” x 36” x 3/4”
- 45.7 x 45.7 x 1 cm – 18” x 18” x 3/4”
- 40,6 x 40,6 x 1 cm – 16” x 16” x 3/4”
- 30 x 30 x 2 cm
- 30 x 60 x 2 cm
- 50 x 50 x 2 cm
- 60 x 60 x 2 cm
- 40 x 40 x 1 cm
- 40 x 60 x 1 cm
Upon request, it is possible to produce custom-size tiles according to the customer needs.

Treatment processes and look
The treatment processes generally carried out on tiles are:
After the sawing step, irregularities may occur on the tiles. The calibration is a surface smoothing operation, making it perfectly flat and regular. This way, the tiles will be ready to pass to the next stage of processing.
This process is nothing more than trimming the edges of the tile, mostly on its four corners. With rare exceptions, the chamfering is carried out on marble tiles by machining. This process is optional, but makes for a very pleasant framed look in the observer’s eye.
This is the final treatment process, which consists in giving a specific effect to the tile’s surface.
Below, you can find a list of the most common types of finishing performed on Carrara marble tiles:
- Bush hammering
- Sand blasting
- Chiseled finish

Carrara Marble Tiles
If you are wondering how long it takes to manufacture the tiles, it is because you probably have a project to deliver within a specific deadline.
Don’t worry, because we will clarify every aspect for you here below.
The production time of the tiles is mainly determined by:
- The material availability (type of requested marble);
- The size of the tile
- The required quantity
The material availability is one of the variables on which the manufacturing time depends. If you are looking for tiles of Bianco Carrara marble C or CD, when you purchase from us, you will probably find them available on stock, as the demand is high for this material.
If instead you are looking for Statuario tiles, the production is upon request. Being a high-value material and not easily available, the delivery times are around 20 to 40 days, according to the treatment process requested.
There are exceptions. Sometimes, not very often, we have a leftover stock that matches the customer’s needs – then, it is immediately available. This happens only after very big orders.
Size of the tiles
The size of the tiles is another influencing factor.
On section 4, you may have observed the standard sizes we normally sell in Italy and abroad. Choosing one of these sizes means having more probability of quickly finding what you are looking for. This is mainly determined by the greater availability, but not only.
When you request a custom size, the manufacturer will have to reset and calibrate the machinery, and this will involve a few more working days.
The required quantity
The quantity involved is the last variable.
In addition to the availability of the material and the size, what greatly affects the delivery times is the quantity. For this reason, we always recommend to think about the cladding material in advance.
Because marble is not an exact science, it can reserve some pitfalls deriving from the nature of the material. So, the manufacturer would better not work under the pressure of the deadline.
Hasty work, especially in this field, is never good to the end customer, who is also the only one to pay for the result.
At World Service Carrara, we tend, in the consulting phase, to clarify every aspect to you, to guarantee an optimal and detailed service. This way, everyone can plan and take their time to accomplish the job.
Prices and cost
How much do Carrara marble tiles cost?
This question can be compared to: how much does a car cost?
As you may have seen, there are a lot of Carrara marble types; a specific answer will follow a specific request for an offer. Reasonable, isn’t it?
Also here, the variables are the same: availability, size of the material and quantity.
The bigger the quantity, the smaller the price. The higher the quality, the higher the price. With standard sizes, the price goes down.
To give you a price range, you can find tiles of Bianco Carrara CD in standard sizes from € 40 or € 50 per square meter, to over € 500 per square meter for tiles of Statuario or Calacatta in custom sizes.
Our advice is not to make a superficial research, based only on price lists you find online, but ask for a detailed offer. It happened often to see online quotations without considering the finishing treatments, increasing thus the end price at the purchasing phase.
If you are interested in buying marble tiles, we can offer you free consulting. One of our experts will take care of your request and prepare the best quotation for you.

Calculating the necessary quantity of tiles
Would you like to calculate the needed quantity of marble tiles, but you do not know how?
First thing, you shall calculate the area of the surface you would like to cover.
In case you want a floor cladding for a squared or a rectangular room, you have to multiply two perpendicular sides of the ground.
For example, if the room is 6 meters length and 7 meters width, you just need to multiply these two measures:
6 x 7 = 42 sqm (square meters)
So, is it the correct quantity to buy?
No, you have to add the scrap.
If you do not know what it means, the scrap corresponds to the discarded material. Let’s suppose you should cover a room floor with tiles. It happens that, in the laying phase, some tiles must be cut, as the size of the floor is not exactly the multiple of the tiles’ size.
In addition, it may occur that, in 100 marble tiles, a small part presents small defects you do not like – this is another reason to consider the scrap. Moreover, having some additional material turns out to be useful over time.
A standard estimate of the scrap is about 10% to be added to the calculated area.
Attention: according to the shape of the tiles and the surface to cover, it must be necessary to calculate a different percentage of scrap.
Just to clear things out:
If you would like to cover a quite regular floor of 80 sqm with tiles of 30×30 cm (small size), the scrap would be lower than if we had to cover the same surface with a larger size, for example, 120×90 cm.
If we use these tiles of large size, we would add a scrap of 20%, to be sure. Back to the first example, once it is decided that the scrap is 10%, we proceed in the following way:
42 sqm x 1,10 (10%) = 46,2 sqm (square meters)
You will need at least 46,2 square meters of tiles.
How do I calculate the quantity of tiles if my room is not square or rectangular?
Do you have a room like this?
To make it simple, you must divide the area in polygons and then use the specific formulas.
Calculate the area of rectangle A: (Long Side x Short Side) 6 x 8 = 48 sqm
Calculate the area of triangle B: (Base x Height / 2) (2 x 6) / 2 = 6 sqm
Sum the A and B areas:
48 + 6 = 54 sqm
Add the scrap: (10%)
54 x 1,10 = 59,4 sqm

How to install marble tiles
In this section, we would like to give you some information about the installation of Carrara marble tiles.
The first precaution – that unfortunately not all installers follow – is the perfect cleaning of the laying surface.
What would happen if, due to the superficiality of the fitters, you find yourself with an uneven floor?
It is therefore very important to have a laying surface perfectly clean and smooth.
Before installing the tiles, it is recommended to display and match them on the floor according to your specifications, to recreate the desired effect. This procedure is called dry laying.
We recommend you to pay close attention when laying marble tiles, using the proper type of adhesive and preventing the formation of humidity underneath.
Residual humidity could emerge, staining the surface of the marble with halos and/ or pinkish or yellowish marks, which are basically impossible to remove.
A lack of attention in this regard would turn useless all the good work done until this point.
The specialized tiles installers, with which we collaborate for the laying of our materials, are always very mindful regarding these issues.
There are several types of adhesives and mortars, suitable for marble laying, available on the market and, with a simple online search, you will be able to understand which one fits your needs.
Usually, a minimum grout joint is left in the Carrara marble laying. Why?
This way, the pattern of the slab can be reproduced, nearly masking the gap in between each couple of tiles.
Furthermore, by reducing the joints to a minimum space, the use of grout is also minimum, with the benefit of a cleaner surface.
Is it appropriate to waterproof the tiles?
If the marble is often exposed to water or other liquids, like a floor in the bathroom or a backsplash in the kitchen, or even an outdoor flooring, then yes, we recommend it.
There are hydro-oil repellents available on the market that can be also eco-friendly, no matter what finishing you choose.
Despite the waterproofing treatment penetrates into the tiles, it does not change their quality or breathability. On the contrary, it gives them a greater resistance to scratching.
Once the tiles are laid and the surface is clean, the hydro repellent can be uniformly applied using a brush and, before it is dry, the excess quantity must be removed with a dry cloth.
After this treatment, you will notice that any liquid that spills on the tile will tend to take on a spheric shape instead of spreading across the surface.
Finally, the aforementioned process prevents the formation of algae and mold in environments where humidity is king.
How to distinguish Carrara marble tiles from imitations
Unfortunately, there are numerous imitations of Carrara marble. Our advice is to always contact a reliable supplier and, whenever possible, one from the Carrara area.
In many markets, especially the ones in Asia, it is apparently possible to find very similar materials, which however have nothing to do with the original Carrara marble.
A good method to distinguish Carrara marble tiles from imitations is to compare:
- The granularity
- The gloss effect
- The pattern
If you want to explore this subject, we have addressed it deeply in a previous article that you can find here.
